
Masoor Dal (Red Lentil Curry) with Tarka Rice

Masoor Dal (Red Lentil Curry) with Tarka Rice
Ingredients
500 grams red lentils (masoor dal)
1 tbsp Red chili powder
2 litre water (or as needed)
1 cup oil or ghee
1 medium onion, finely chopped
5 cloves garlic
1 tsp garlic, grated
4-5 green chilies, chopped (optional)
4-5 curry leaves
1 tbsp vegetable salt
3 round red chillies
½ teaspoon turmeric powder
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 cup chicken stock
Salt to taste
Fresh cilantro for garnish
- Tarka Rice Ingredients
½ kg basmati rice
1/2 cup oil
1 medium onion sliced
3 clove
10 black pepper whole
1 tsp cumin whole
Salt to taste
½ litre water
Directions
- Rinse the Lentils:
Wash the red lentils under cold water until the water runs clear - Cook the Lentils:
In a large pot, add the lentils and water. Add red chili powder,salt,turmeric powder and whole garlic. Bring it to a boil and then reduce the heat to a simmer. Cook for 30-40 minutes, until the lentils are soft and cooked through. Stir occasionally and skim off any foam that forms on top. - Prepare the Tempering (Tarka)
While the lentils are cooking, heat oil or ghee in a separate pan over medium heat.
Add garlic, let it splutter for about 30 seconds.
Add the chopped onions and sauté until golden brown (about 2-3 minutes).
Add green and round red chillies, crushed cumin and curry leaves.Sauté for another minute. - Combine the Dal and Tempering (Tarka):
Once the lentils are cooked, add the tempered spice mixture to the pot of dal and stir well to combine. Add chicken stock and vegetable salt and cook for another 5 minutes - Prepare Rice:
Add oil in a pot then add onions and all the spices, salt, black pepper, cumin seeds, clove and let it simmer for 5 minutes.
Add water and bring it to a boil.
Add rice and cook it until 90 percent rice is cooked then cover the pot on slow heat for another 10 minutes - Garnish and Serve:
Garnish daal with fresh cilantro and serve hot with rice or roti
